As of this writing, I have finished Alpha Protocol. To summarize my experience... It's like a very action-packed dating sim, or a James Bond simulator.
There were quite a bit of the game I enjoyed, primarily the dialogue system and changing plot structures. While the end will ultimately be the same, how it plays out will be different. That is quite an enjoyable experience knowing that your choices as a player did indeed effect how it changed through the game than a simple cookie-cut experience where the only factors of how it ends are restricted choices that one gets regardless of how they play. Despite a lot of the flaws, I actually want to go back and see how different scenarios would change depending on the like\dislike, who you meet, and even what information you get. Among other actions.
Other than that, I found majority of the games to be... unpolished. And the way it kind of presents itself is misleading as well. This game is not a stealth game. I repeat, not a stealth game. I made this unfortunate mistake which really hurt my enjoyment early on, but I realized it is more of a James Bond-esque concept. You enter in silently, and end with a firefight with shit blowing up, whilst getting the girl. So, consider yourself a masochist if you do not invest in any form of combat skills.
Perhaps I am wrong, but a lot of the other aspects of the game is greatly hindered by bugs and limited use so it's really hard to say if you can go about this without finding yourself in a firefight. At least, later on as the master shadow skill with some perks, you can basically go through an entire situation without being noticed. Otherwise, without the benefits of skills and perks, it's difficult going stealthily, especially when it seems to be no specific route in that I haven't noticed your performance correlates how the mission turns out than the one they already predetermined. So be prepared to be thrown into situation where your skills may not be useful.
Firefight\coverSystem... well, cover is the least thing I did because it would always screw me more than anything else. Actually, I accidentally covered more than I consciously did so. The same button for action and cover wasn't a good decision.
Anyhow, I decided to not go into a review-esque approach to this. You can go anywhere for that. I'll simply keep in mind of the highlight...
This game is awesome in regards of feeling like you can keep moving forward as long as you got life. There is no unwinnable situation that I have seen. And depending on your skills and decisions previously, will affect what happens later on. And I love that.
As well, the characters in the game are quite entertaining and diverse so you really have to consider who'll be helpful and not, and that information is a very powerful key component as well. Not enough, you may get screwed.
It's quite a good concept of a game, and I enjoyed it despite the flaws. Hopefully, there will be games aspired from this, but executed better.
So I recommend it, especially since the game is at a fare price on Steam
I'm also considering doing an LP on this at some point. Seems like a fun idea. And thanks for JefMajor on youtube for lping this game and introducing me to it.
Over the year, I've took the task of learning Japanese so I can enjoy games that didn't get the best translation or simply the more genuine version. As well, manga\anime. So, I may use this blog for that, but really, it's a general blog. I'll post whatever comes to mind, but hopefully, it'll be more of a personal documentation of my progress. Maybe share what I have learned. Maybe even try to type in japanese when I develop my vocabulary more.
